Pirate’s Booty Invites You to Celebrate “Talk Like a Pirate Day” on September 19th
At Pirate’s Booty, speaking like a pirate is an everyday affair. From our outgoing voicemail message to corporate communications, pirate speak is encouraged and rewarded at Pirate’s Booty. However, on Saturday, September 19th, you and the rest of the world will get to join in on the fun on International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Talk Like a Pirate Day is a holiday that was invented in 1995 by Ol’ Chumbucket (John Baur) and Cap’n Slappy (Mark Summers), who proclaimed September 19th as the day when everyone, everywhere in the world should talk like a pirate. The holiday was founded on a racquetball court in Albany, Oregon. While after letting out a few “arrrrrrs” and “shiver me timbers” during a match, Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy A.K.A. “The Pirate Guys,” realized how much fun it was to talk like the motley sailors we are all so fascinated with. The two men decided right then and there to share this amusing pastime with the rest of the world. Avast, “Talk Like a Pirate Day” was born!
We at Pirate’s Booty encourage you to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day this year with your friends and family! Please see the following tips from Pirate’s Booty and “The Pirate Guys” on how to throw a fun and adventurous pirate themed party:
Set the Sail…I mean Set the Stage
- Seek out or create invitations that feature a skull and cross bones, a treasure chest or put your invite/message in a bottle!
- Decorate your home in a pirate theme – drape fishing net and rope on your TV or coffee table, set the table with pirate tableware, hang pirate signs or decorations, serve beverages out of grog mugs.
- Encourage your guests to dress up like pirates and wenches! Also make sure to have swords, eye patches and bandanas around, for those who forget to pick up a costume.
- Play pirate music to set the adventurous ambience.
Entertain the Scallywags
- Have a treasure hunt in your backyard or around your home – hide treasure chests stocked with chocolate gold coins and bejeweled necklaces, create a map and let the games begin!
- Play Walk the Plank – Construct a 2-foot by 5-foot plank using cardboard or wood. (For safety reasons, please leave the plank on the floor as opposed to it being elevated.) If you want to make the game really dramatic, add a blue tarp and some inflatable water creatures under the plank for effect. Next, challenge your mateys to walk forward, backward or sideways without falling into the water. Blindfold the contestants if you feel they need an advanced challenge.
Don’t Serve the Usual Rum and Grog
- For nibbles, you can’t get a product more perfect than Pirate’s Booty. Purchase one ounce bags in various Pirate’s Booty flavors and serve the packets out of a treasure chest. The product packaging can double as décor!
- For main courses, steer towards Caribbean cuisine like Jerk Chicken or fresh fish fritters.
- Create tasty rum based cocktails like Planters Punch and banana daiquiris.
- Bake a tasty treasure chest or pirate ship cake.
Utilize “The Pirate Guys’” Five A’s
- Ahoy – Hello
- Avast – Stop and give attention
- Aye – I agree with everything you say
- Aye, Aye – Yes, I’ll get right on that
- Arrrrrr – This can mean anything you want it to. It’s all about the execution.
